The Sea Pines Resort is one of Hilton Head Island’s most iconic luxury destinations, a 5,000-acre oceanfront retreat known for its world-class amenities, rich Lowcountry setting, and global golf prestige as the host of the annual RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing, a PGA TOUR Signature Event at Harbour Town Golf Links, which attracts top players and tens of thousands of spectators each year.
The resort offers a comprehensive guest experience with three championship golf courses, award-winning tennis facilities, a full-service marina, five miles of pristine beaches, and a wide range of activities including biking, watersports, horseback riding, and nature experiences across scenic preserves, along with diverse dining, shopping, and family-friendly entertainment options.
To support this expansive environment and high-profile events, The Sea Pines Resort modernized its network with RUCKUS to deliver seamless, high-performance connectivity across accommodations, public spaces, and PGA tournament operations, enhancing guest satisfaction, enabling digital services, and reliably supporting tens of thousands of visitors during peak periods.
The Challenge: Delivering reliable, high-density connectivity across a sprawling resort and PGA event environment
As guest expectations for always-on connectivity increased, The Sea Pines Resort needed a network infrastructure capable of supporting reliable wireless coverage across a sprawling multi-property environment.
The previous infrastructure struggled with aging hardware, inconsistent coverage, and the inability to handle high-density environments during conferences, resort events, and PGA tournament operations. Wi-Fi complaints from guests were common, especially in villas, conference spaces, and public areas where large numbers of users connected simultaneously.
Managing connectivity across more than 400 rental homes and villas also created operational complexity. Each property previously relied on different consumer-grade routers and unique login credentials, creating a heavy support burden for front desk and IT teams.
During the annual PGA tournament, connectivity became even more critical. Temporary retail tents, point-of-sale systems, hospitality areas, media operations, and guest services all depended on stable wireless performance to support tens of thousands of daily attendees.
The Solution: A unified, high-performance network powered by RUCKUS
The Sea Pines Resort upgraded its infrastructure using a comprehensive RUCKUS wired and wireless networking solution managed through RUCKUS SmartZone™.
The deployment included nearly 600 indoor and outdoor access points, including R510, R610, and R650 indoor models and T310 and T350 outdoor access points, strategically placed throughout the property, including hotels, villas, beaches, golf facilities, restaurants, retail areas, conference spaces, and outdoor gathering areas. The solution was supported by a robust wired backbone powered by RUCKUS ICX 7150 and 7450 switches, ensuring reliable performance across critical operations.
Outdoor RUCKUS access points enabled innovative guest experiences, including:
- Mobile food and beverage ordering directly from beach chairs
- Wireless connectivity for golf operations and tee-time management via iPads
- Reliable guest access throughout marina and dock areas
- Seamless connectivity across PGA tournament hospitality and retail zones
The resort also standardized wireless access across all homes and villas using RUCKUS R510, R610, and R650 access points, allowing guests to connect once and roam seamlessly throughout the property without reconnecting or managing multiple passwords.
Using RUCKUS SmartZone™, the IT team gained centralized visibility, simplified troubleshooting, and improved operational efficiency across the entire resort network.
“It’s a predictable system that’s easy to manage, and the hardware is robust.”
Chris Murphy, IT Infrastructure Engineer
