City of Mesa advances smart city connectivity with RUCKUS
The City of Mesa, Arizona, has partnered with RUCKUS for more than a decade to build a citywide wireless ecosystem that provides public connectivity while supporting smart city operations. More than 1,500 wireless access points have been deployed across the city, creating a scalable connectivity foundation for residents, visitors and connected city services. The network is supported by RUCKUS One, an AI-driven cloud management platform that helps the city monitor network health, identify anomalies and remotely resolve issues.

digital transformation
Mesa has built a scalable municipal wireless ecosystem that delivers public internet access while providing a connectivity foundation for smart city services and future innovation. The network helps expand digital inclusion by providing connectivity in public spaces and supporting residents' access to work, education and essential public services.
The network also supports smart city infrastructure, including traffic management, environmental sensors and public safety cameras. By integrating wireless infrastructure into existing municipal assets such as streetlights, Mesa can expand connectivity while minimizing visual impact and leveraging existing power and connectivity pathways.
RUCKUS One adds an AI-driven operational layer, continuously monitoring network health, detecting anomalies and initiating remote remediation. This enables city IT teams to troubleshoot and manage infrastructure remotely rather than relying on physical visits to individual network locations.
When the COVID-19 pandemic made remote work and online learning essential, Mesa's community Wi-Fi infrastructure became an important resource for residents who lacked reliable broadband at home. The network helped keep residents connected to work, school and essential public services, reinforcing the city's broader digital inclusion strategy.

The Challenge: Connecting a sprawling city without compromising reliability or aesthetics
Mesa needed to provide reliable public connectivity across a large and dynamic urban environment where periods of high usage could create congestion and interference. At the same time, deploying municipal wireless infrastructure required solving practical challenges around power, connectivity backhaul, permissions and the physical placement of equipment.
Because much of the network operates in public spaces, Mesa also needed an approach that would minimize the visual impact of hardware and cabling. Managing a network spanning more than 1,500 access points created an additional operational challenge: maintaining service reliability across a geographically dispersed infrastructure without requiring constant on-site troubleshooting.
The Solution: A scalable, AI-driven network built into the city environment
RUCKUS partnered with the City of Mesa to create a citywide wireless ecosystem spanning more than 1,500 access points. The deployment uses outdoor wireless infrastructure integrated into existing municipal assets, including streetlights, allowing the city to take advantage of existing power and connectivity pathways while keeping network equipment discreet.
Today, RUCKUS One provides an AI-driven cloud management layer for the network. It monitors network health, identifies anomalies, triages problems and can initiate remote remediation. This allows city IT teams to manage network infrastructure remotely and reduce the need to physically dispatch personnel to troubleshoot individual locations.
“Connectivity is like a utility today; people just expect it to work. The reliability of our platform and our ability to adapt to a dynamic and changing environment is where we really shine.”
Bart Giordano, Senior Vice President and General Manager, RUCKUS
